“The rates were better, we didn’t have to sign a contract and it was all quite quick…the bank is not really suited to the pop-up model or for people looking to provide a service very quickly..For all those reasons it’s been perfect for us” – Ray, co-founder of Green Beards
Ray and Kevin, founders of Green Beards Juicery, were among the first in Ireland to specialise in cold pressed juices. An organic partnership was born of passion and inspiration acquired in London, Toronto and the U.S., though Ray and Kevin first became friends studying Commerce in UCD. Cold pressing is the healthiest way to make juice, extracting the maximum possible nutrients from fruits and vegetables. This is a handcrafted process where each fruit and vegetable is pressed individually, starting at 3:00 am. The Green Beards crew describes this as “a time consuming but not tedious Zen exercise”.
“One of the hard things is actually to incorporate fruit and veg into your diet. It can be hard on a 9-5 job busy and you come home. It’s quite hard to cook a meal and oftentimes in Ireland it’s so cold that you wouldn’t go for salad as your prefered choice a lot of the time, ” Ray explains. To make healthier living easier, the Green Beards juices are vegetable with small amounts of fruits for flavour. Sadly, while many of us think we are treating our bodies to healthy smoothies elsewhere, they are mostly pints of sugar with little nutritional value.
Green Beards customers are often conscious of their carbon footprint so the Mozobi Card terminal which offers emailed and text receipts is an excellent fit. Ray says that what he refers to as “future thinking” by Mozobi Payments fits in with the ethos of the business which is to recycle as much as possible. Smoothie cups, glass bottles, even the straws at Green Beards are recycled. The straws are made from corn, in case you were wondering. Green Beards even offers customers 20 cents for a returned bottle.
When Green Beards had the opportunity to launch their pop-up shop in Baggot Street, they realised that using a bank for card payments was not going to work for them. Ray explains “The rates [with Mozobi] were better, we didn’t have to sign a contract and it was all quite quick…the bank is not really suited to the pop-up model or for people looking to provide a service very quickly..For all those reasons it’s been perfect for us”.
The smells of juices and sight of the huge press in action often leads people into the Green Beards simple, beautiful Ranelagh shop. If you pop in there or the Baggot Street shop, Ray and Kevin and their staff are happy to talk about what will work for whatever ails you, be it low energy or a sore head from the night before. While so far Green Beards have focused on doing one thing well, they are starting to delve into porridge, energy balls and maybe soups in the future.
